CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY – Adam Craig passed for 120 yards and two touchdowns while running for 62 yards and another score to lead the Cumberlands Patriots past the NAIA No. 16 Campbellsville Tigers 27-24.
The game wasn’t in the bag for the Patriots until the final play when Campbellsville completed a pass into field goal range only to be called for a false start penalty with 1.1 seconds remaining on the field goal attempt. With no timeouts remaining, the clock ran off with no time for a second attempt.
Campbellsville entered the game ranked No. 16 but the Patriots were intent on opening 2015 with a big statement while trying to turn the page from their disappointing 3-7 campaign a year ago. The junior Craig, who missed much of the 2014 season due to injury, looked much like the dual threat who started four games as freshman in 2013 while leading the Patriots on a playoff run to the NAIA national title game.
The Patriots’ defense also proved opportunistic winning the turnover battle with two interceptions while the Craig-led offense turned in a turnover-free performance.
