BATESVILLE, MS – Demetrius Market rushed for 84 yards including a 31-yard touchdown run with just 2:32 remaining in the game to lead the nation’s No. 7-ranked South Panola (Batesville, MS) Tigers past the Meridian (MS) Wildcats 21-14 Friday night.
Market and the rest of the Tigers were held in check most of the night by the stout Meridian defense, but the Wildcats’ offense was unable to get much going on a night when South Panola’s offense mostly stalled as well. Market’s score, however, finally gave South Panola some breathing room at 21-7, and it proved to be enough despite a late score by Meridian that cut the Tigers’ lead to seven points with just 1:05 remaining.
South Panola would make it stand, however, and the Tigers have likely faced one of the most difficult opponents they will see all year in Meridian.
South Panola’s Donald Twilley, meanwhile, was held to just 54 yards rushing after running for 304 yards the previous week against Clinton (MS). But he also scored the Tigers’ first two touchdowns of the night that proved to be crucial later in the game.
