Every time Curtis Luper thought football was about to be part of his past, the game had other ideas. Like a running back fighting for that extra yard for a crucial first down, football just kept making its way back into the TCU assistant coach’s life.
After battling future College and Pro Football Hall of Famers Barry Sanders and Thurman Thomas for playing time during his three seasons at Oklahoma State, Luper served four years in the Army and was all set to begin his career as a civilian air traffic controller.
“That was one of the most gratifying things I had accomplished, up to that point,” Luper said. “The military was a great experience. You grow up and learn to appreciate a lot of things. Obviously, it helped shape me into who I am today.”
Then, Luper had an epiphany.
