MURFREESBORO, TN – The defending Class 6A champions from Alabama picked up where they left off in the 2015 season opener Friday night.
The Clay-Chalkville (Pinson, AL) Cougars paid a visit to the Blackman (Murfreesboro, TN) Blaze in the first game of the inaugural Middle Tennessee Football Classic, and they returned to Alabama with a 38-7 win, their first of the new season. It was the first of two wins by Alabama schools in the classic as the defending Alabama Class 7A champion Hoover (AL) Buccaneers beat the Oakland (Murfreesboro, TN) Patriots in the nightcap by a score of 24-6.
The result of the two contests over the two highly-regarded Murfreesboro programs gave fans of the two Alabama schools more ammunition in the battle for state bragging rights. Unfortunately, Clay-Chalkville and Hoover aren’t scheduled to play each other in the regular season, and they play in different playoff divisions leaving Alabama fans with only a battle of words for the near future.
Meanwhile, for Blackman, the game marked the beginning of the David Watson era after legendary Tennessee high school coach Philip Shadowens resigned in the spring. Shadowens later landed at William Blount in Maryville, Tennessee, which beat Lenoir City Friday night 24-20 in his debut.
Blackman’s offense struggled in its first game of the Watson era without former star quarterback Jauan Jennings who is now making waves as a wide receiver at the University of Tennessee. Clay-Chalkville, however, is likely better than any other opponent the Blaze will face this fall, and the team should get a better read on where it stands next Friday night against the McCallie (Chattanooga, TN) Blue Tornado.
