NASHVILLE, Tenn. – For three quarters, the Tennessee State Tigers played the role of gracious hosts spotting the Alabama State Hornets a 14-3 lead in the John Merritt Classic at Nissan Stadium in Nashville.
Then the nice guys left the building, and in their place, a determined group of Tigers took over in the fourth quarter with Patrick Smith, Tom Smith and Telvin Hooks all scoring touchdowns to lift the Tigers to a 24-14 win.
Alabama State had mostly controlled the game until then, but their inability to put the sleeping Tigers away by the end of the third period proved costly. So did the flurry of Hornet turnovers that opened the door for the Tigers to mount a rally and open the 2015 season with a big non-conference win.
