JUNEAU, AK – Just four days after returning from a trip to the Arctic to take on the Barrow Whalers, the Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears returned to the capital city for their own home opener on a Wednesday night. Unfortunately for the Bears, it didn’t go nearly as well as their 26-20 win over Barrow.
This time, the tables were turned as a team from the north – the North Pole Patriots – came to Juneau and handed the Crimson Bears a 39-0 beating. The game was basically decided by halftime as the Patriots raced out to a 33-0 lead in a light rain that eventually got heavier in the third quarter when their hosts were trying to mount a comeback.
In all fairness to Juneau, the offense was hampered by the fact that starting quarterback Bubba Stults was out due to an injury suffered in the game at Barrow on Saturday. All-state linebacker Hunter Hickok was forced to step in at quarterback, and the Crimson Bears never could get any rhythm on offense while North Pole was led as usual by all-state quarterback Drew Rogers.
The game was notable, too, for the fact that it was Juneau’s first loss in a home opener since 1995. North Pole, meanwhile, improved to 2-0 on the young season.
